Who says climate change isn’t real?

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed that 2014 was the third warmest year on record. Although it did not beat 2013 as the warmest year on record, the fact that two of the three hottest years are consecutive and occurred since the turn of millennium is a clear sign that climate change is happening right now in Australia.

Here are some facts for the naysayers who think climate change isn’t real:

  • 2014 had the hottest ever Australian Spring on record beating 2013
  • Australia has seen 7 out of 10 warmest years in the last 12 years
  • All of the 10 warmest years recorded have occurred since 1998
  • 2014 was 0.91C above average for the whole year
  • This is slightly more than the global average long-term warming of 0.85C
  • 2014 is likely to be the hottest year globally

The early Spring heatwaves could be the cause of the early seasonal bushfires we are experiencing right now. Professor of Atmospheric Science at the ARC Centre for Excellence Professor David Karoly says, “Unless there is rapid, substantial and sustained reductions of greenhouse gas emissions in Australia, we will experience more heatwaves and bushfires.”
